UP Services
We provide holistic and thorough neurodevelopmental assessments for children aged 6+, across the ability spectrum and with a variety of needs. Our assessments are individually led - we utilise the gold standard clinical assessments and will tailor the assessment process to your child's personal needs. We provide reports containing the outcome of the assessments as well as recommendations specific to the child. If necessary, we will suggest further referral to other services.
Neuropsychological Assessment
A child neuropsychology assessment can contain a number of sections. Primarily, a cognitive assessment (sometimes referred to as an IQ assessment) is completed. We use the WISC-V which is the gold standard for cognitive assessments. The WISC-V allows the psychologist to assess a broad range of abilities associated with intelligence, including verbal reasoning, abstract problem solving, visual-spatial abilities, working memory and processing speed. Although the WISC-V can provide numerical data that shows how a child compares to their peers, through the assessment process, valuable information is also observed and noted. This allows a clinician to form a clinical opinion about the child's functional abilities and behaviour and provide a more holistic perspective about their strengths and challenges.
The psychologist may also choose to complete a number of other assessments such as assessments of memory and executive functioning if this is felt necessary.
Speech and Language Assessment
For some children, the hurdles that they face may include language abilities and their development of expressive and receptive language. Our speech and language therapists can utilise a myriad of tools to dive deeper into your child's language profile and identify any areas that may be limiting their ability to meet their potential. Assessments may include a thorough assessment of language function; an assessment of auditory processing; assessments of pragmatic language and elements of social communication. We would advocate for every child to have both the Neuropsychological and Speech and Language Assessment for the following reasons:

-
The two processes assess different yet interlinked abilities and skills
-
Neurodevelopment encompasses both language and cognitive ability
-
A neurodevelopmental SALT assessment is rarely available yet there is a high level of undiagnosed language disorders
-
Without understanding overall cognitive ability, it is almost impossible to identify language disorders
-
Without understanding language it is almost impossible to determine a holistic neurodevelopmental profile

Fundamentally, although independently these assessments are robust and helpful – their power is in combination.
SEN Consultation
We are extremely fortunate to have an experienced Primary SENCO Teacher working as a consultant to the clinic. The SEN consultant is available to consult with parents/carers for a number of different issues. For example:
-
Advice on navigating the EHCP process
-
Advice on what to look for when applying for schools
-
Recommendations for specific learning interventions
-
Strategies for developing confidence with learning
